Which is Better for Readability: a Serif or Sans Serif Font?

If you are thinking about the readability of your web site, you're probably wondering which fonts to use, and when. (Maybe it's because you read my usabiltiy quick fix Improve Readability.) Your basic decision is between serif and sans serif fonts. Today's web offers you a few options within each of these categories (Times New Roman and Courier for the former and Trebuchet and Verdana for the latter), but each group still has distinct advantages and disadvantages for readability.
