Inserting a Field in Visio

From About.com

You can add fields to shapes and text boxes in Visio. The advantage of using a field over a regular text box is that fields are updated automatically. For example, you can create a date field which is updated to reflect the current date each time you open the file.

How to insert a field:

    1. Select a text field (or any other shape) in which you would like the field to display
    2. Go to Insert > Field…
    3. Select the appropriate Category, Field, and Format. For example, if you would like to display the current date, select Date/Time (Category), Current Date/Time (Field), and the format you would like (Format).

Another great way to use fields is to use it in your background stationery for page descriptions. You can create a field on the background which will automatically reflect the page name. Then, each time you create a new page using that background, the title you give that page will automatically show up in that field. (To get this effect, in the Field dialog box select: Page Info (Category), Name (Field), and the format you prefer.)
